Financial services company Cowen has named former Houlihan Lokey executive David M.V. Barnes to the firm’s investment banking team as a managing director in the financial sponsor coverage group.

In his new role, Barnes will be responsible for developing and maintaining long-term relationships with middle market and mid-cap private equity firms, the company said in a statement. He will be based in Cowen’s San Francisco office.

Barnes comes to Cowen with a deep understanding of the private equity community and vast industry-specific knowledge, the company added. Prior to coming aboard, he was the architect and co-founder of the Houlihan Lokey’s financial sponsor and hedge fund coverage groups. He brings more than 25 years of investment banking experience from stints as vice president in charge of M&A at Protection One and senior manager at Coopers & Lybrand Securities, and amassed principal investing experience from positions with Brentwood Associates and Hancock Park Associates. He began his finance career with Morgan Stanley.

“I am thrilled that David has joined Cowen’s Sponsor Coverage team as his impressive background and investment banking experience will complement Cowen’s client-centric vision,” said Kevin Raidy, Cowen’s head of investment banking. “David also has a wealth of knowledge in the financial sponsor sector and he is uniquely qualified to offer thoughtful and strategic advice to Cowen’s private equity clients.”

Cowen’s investment banking division has expertise with growth companies in debt and equity capital raising, as well as merger and acquisitions, cross-border transactions, shareholder activist situations and takeover defenses. Core sectors include health care, TMT, information and technology services, consumer, industrials, energy and transportation.

Founded in 1918 and based in New York, Cowen Group is a diversified financial services firm providing alternative asset management, investment banking, research, sales and trading and prime brokerage services through Cowen Investment Management, its alternative investment segment, and Cowen and Company, its broker-dealer unit.
